Benin, a small country in the great African continent

Benin is one of the smallest countries in the African continent. There are no centres of Opus Dei there yet, but some undergraduates are already receiving weekly classes of Christian formation in the capital.

The University of Benin, Uniben as it is called, is in the capital, where the majority of undergraduates are Catholic.

Although there are no centres of Opus Dei yet in Benin, some activities have been organized to offer Christian formation to some university students. We meet up in an apartment located some 5 minutes from the center of the university. Aside from classes of Christian doctrine, there is a portable library for spiritual reading where the books are passed from one to another.

Recently, one Saturday, just after we had done the prayer with some points given by a priest for our meditation, a new fellow knocked on the door. He was Henry, an Engineering student. He was looking for “The House”, as that apartment had come to be known.

Streets of Porto Novo, capital of Benin.

Henry did not know about Opus Dei, but a friend of his had been coming to the Catechism classes. One day, talking about some doubts he had about the Christian faith and the Gospels, Henry’s friend had given him a book that could answer his doubts, and he encouraged him to clarify any other questions by talking with the priest of “The House”.

That night, Henry devoured the book, and the following day he did not hesitate to come to the apartment. His honesty and desire to have his questions answered impressed us. Now, like so many other Beninese, he attends the weekly classes that we have about the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
